Robert Alfred Burn & Susan Bennett & Edith Hocking

The oldest great grandson of William Hone, Robert Alfred Burn was the only surviving son of Robert Burn and Janet Neilson. He was born in 1857 and died in 1947. He married, firstly to Susan Bennett in 1894. After Susan's death in 1908 he married Edith Hocking (died 1980 aged 93) in 1909. He may have sometimes been known as Alfred Burn, for an 1892 Orbost news article refers to an Alfred Burn living in Orbost.

In 1898, Susan received a Crown Grant in Bairnsdale.

From his marriage to Susan Bennett, Robert had five children.

1. Alfred John (1894 - 1917).  Alfred (service number:1020) embarked on October 20, 1914, on the HMAT Shropshire. He was killed in action in Belgium on October 4, 1917. He is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, Passchendaele, Flanders, Belgium. This may be the same Alfred Burn who sometimes worked as a boxer.

3. Evelyn Emma (1898 - 1945) married Thomas Campbell in 1932.

4. Nellie (1901 - 1901)

5. Alice (1908 - 1968). Alice did not marry. She died on August 24 in 1968 and is buried in Melbourne.

In 1909, Robert married Edith Hocking, the daughter of James and Eliza Hocking. 

From his marriage to Edith Hocking, Robert had six children.

1. Norman Robert (1910 -?) married Ethel Mary Pike in 1943.

2. Eunice May (1912 -?) married Edward Morton Lowater in 1934.

3. Sylvia Florence (1913 - 2008) married Ronald Ward in 1935.

4. Hamilton Kitchener (1915 - 1917)

5. Bruce Burn (?-?)

6. Nelson Colin Burn (1921 -2015) married Ruth Ostler in 1948. Ruth died in 2014 in Orbost.
