7. EMMA HONE and Carl Hahn

Emma Hone was the seventh child of William and Sarah. She was born on March 14, 1814 and died in 1880. She married Carl Hahn (1818 -1895) in Windhoek, South Africa in 1843. Emma left England for South Africa in early 1843, working as the Superintendent of the St Stephen's Lutheran Church mission school. 

Carl was born in Latvia. He was a missionary of the Rhenish Missionary Society and arrived in South Africa in 1842. After marrying in 1843, Carl and Emma lived in Otjikango until 1853. From 1855 they settled in Otjimbingwe where Carl established a teacher training school. 
Carl was said to be one of the most influential missionaries in Nambia in the 19th century. Not only did he resolve disputes between warring tribes, he contributed significantly to the Berlin Museum's collection of reptiles.

He is described as an important Otjiherero linguist and received an honourary PhD from the University of Leipzig in 1873. You can find further information about Carl here.

Emma and Carl lived in Gordon's Bay, Cape Province in a house called "Deville". She is buried with her husband at the cemetery of the German St Petri Congregation at Paarl near Cape Town.


Emma and Carl had four children:

1. William Henrich Josaphat (7/8/1844 - 1925)


2Carl Hugo (1846 -1933) born Otjikango. Was a Pastor in Paarl, South Africa. He married Annie von Linsingen (1861 - 1938) in 1881. 
Carl and Annie had six children, four of which have been recorded as:

  • Ernst Albert Linsingen Hahn, (1890-1918) Died WW1
  • Carl Hugo Linsingen "Cocky" Hahn (1896 - ?)
  • Benno Oscar Linsingen Hahn (1900 - 1917) in a flying accident
  • Alfred Friedrich Linsingen Hahn (1902 -?)

3. Eloisa Traugott Hahn (15 Aug 1848 -1939) Born in South Africa but died in Hanover, Germany. He married Rosalie Sophie Paling (1850 - 1905) in 1872. Eloisa and Rosalie had 12 children. For more information on this branch of the family please visit. Eloisa died in Estonia.

4. Emma Marguerite Hahn (6 July 1850 - 1906) Born in Rehobeth, Namaland, S Africa. Emma emigrated to America in the 1880s and died in the Bronx, New York in 1906.  Emma married the Rev C Henrich Beiderbecke in 6 July 1875. Her son, Frederick Christian Beiderbecke was born in 1876 in South Africa. He married Catherine Thum. With Cartherine he had Joseph Thum Beidebecker (1911 -1995).
