Mary Rose Burn & George Waycott & Thomas Barratt

Mary Rose Burn was born in Omeo, Victoria in 1860. She died in 1926. Mary married George Waycott in 1879 and following George's death, she married Thomas Barratt in 1889.

Soon after they were married, newspapers articles suggest George and Mary lived in Orbost. In November 1888, the Bairnsdale Advertiser reported that George had died from a long battle with cancer. "A telegram was received from Orbost yesterday by Mr James Johnston, stating that Mr George Waycott had died there on Tuesday morning. The deceased gentleman was well known and esteemed here, and had been a long sufferer of cancer, to which he eventually succumbed."

Together George and Mary had 6 children:

1. Frances Joyce (1879 -1957) married to George Thomas Jaspar Morgan in 1904. It appears George worked as a carrier. George also appears to have owned the Orbost Saw Mill. George's father was the President of the Orbost Racing Club.

2. George Leonard (1881 - 1954)

3. Allan Victor (1882 - 1882)

4. Mary Alice (1883 - ?) married John Eric Linn in 1909.

5. Daisy (1885 - ?)

6. Jean (1888 - ?

With Thomas Barratt, Mary had a further 10 children (it appears two lots of twins) The family at one stage lived in Bendigo Avenue, Toora, Victoria. It appears Mary had her own private hospital in Toora. In doing so, she followed in the family tradition as her sisters Hilda Mores and Lily Strickland were nurses.

1. Elizabeth May (1891- ?)

2. Josephine Mary aka Molly (1891 - 1970) married Fredrich Heinicke in 1920

3. William Edward Barratt (1893 - 1914) A newspaper article about William's death can be read here. In this newspaper article, he is referred to as Edward Barratt.

4. Reginald Wooryal (1896 - died World War 1 in 1916). A story about Reginald's passing can be found in the South Gippsland Shire Advocate in October 1818. I believe that our Reginald is the same one mentioned in this article about a Walter Barratt, artist.

5. Emily Vera (1896 - 1975) married Arthur Thomas Wilson in 1818

6. Doris Lillian (1898 - ?)

7. Laura Rea (1899 - 1900)

8. Hector Austin (1901 - 1985)

9. Herbert Vincent (1903 - 1978)

10. John Leslie (1905 - 1978)
